Pathology
AVM
abnormally high flow often causes ectatic remodeling of the veins draining the AVM or of the arteries feeding it
Cerebral amyloid angiopathy
amyloid fibril accumulation in small-medium sized arteries
Cavmals / Angiomas
irregular venous-type channels lined by flat endothelium
surrounded by scant smooth muscle
Hypertension
degeneration of intima media →fragmentation of arterial smooth muscle → lipohyalinosis, fibrinoid necrosis of subendothelium, microaneurysms, focal dilatations in arteriols
Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy
pseudolaminar necrosis
Primary CNS vasculitis
transmural inflammation, vessel wall injury
Sturge-Weber Syndrome
pseudolaminar Ca2+ of neocortex, cortical atrophy underneath leptomeningeal angiomatosis
Tuberous sclerosis
cortical tubers (thickened / raised occasionally dimpled gyrus)
giant cells, dysmorphic neurons, gliosis, calcifications as well prominent cell loss in all cortical layers and lamination.
Pseudolaminar necrosis
Pseudolaminar necrosis
